You can think your online business as a conjunction of two important processes:

To achieve online presence, your website must be compliant with current search engine criteria.

To preserve the communication with your customers, you must be compliant with the anti-spam polices.

Be aware, this is a huge area of online business, and the naked truth is that only test and analysis can overcome the "always changing" characteristic of search engines.

There are on page factors and off page factors.

On page optimization is all about the quality of your web site such as accessibility, navigability and content quality.

Off page includes the quality of your url and the quantity and quality of incoming links to your site.

Though on page optimization is important and mustn't be neglected, of page factors of the online business optimization are the most relevant ones.

Link quality

A good incoming link has a description (or anchor text) that is closely related to your site.

Your incoming links must have keyword targeted anchor text.

It is also important that they are presented in a contextual keyword rich text.

Link quantity

Incoming links may be seen as votes to your site. The more votes and the more popular your site is, the better position it will achieve in the search result page of the searching engine.

Your incoming links must come from different ip addresses to count as different votes to your site.

Quality of your url

Your url must be also keyword targeted, that is, you must name your pages with the main keyword (or keyword phrase) of the content in them.

This is the least important factor of off page online business optimization, but it can add value to your effort.

 

Online business optimization is an ongoing process.

You must build your link strategy slowly but steadily in time to achieve top results.
