Each one of the most important search engines has an algorithm to qualify the relevance of the sites.

With Google the qualifying variable is called Page Rank (PR) and is a number between 0 to 10 (the best is 10).

With Alexa, you have the Alexa's Rank starting with 1 (the best) up to several millions. This rank is a sort of media to qualify the popularity of your site among Alexa users.

The ranking criteria can differ to determine who gets top placement so you have to choose with which search engine you will work before you start your search engine training.

Be aware, search engine training is a huge area of online business, and it must be taken very seriously. Only in deep analysis can overcome the sudden changes in algorithms which is characteristic of search engines.

During your search engine training study you will have to analyze on page factors and off page factors.

On page factors of the search engine training must include the analysis of keywords and their use in the webcopy and file names.

It is also important to use your keywords in the document title tag.

All your links in your site must be written with the total path to where the document can be found. Use clean code always and avoid Frames and Tables.

Off page factors includes the quality of your url, but mainly the quantity and quality of incoming links to your site. These factors of search engine training are the most relevant ones.
Incoming links have paramount importance. The more links means the more popular, the better PR and position it will achieve in the search result page.

But quantity isn't all, your incoming links must have good quality too.

A good incoming link has a description (or anchor text) that is closely related to your site and is keyword targeted.

The contextual tex where the link is inserted is also important.
Your incoming links must come from different ip addresses to count as different votes to your site.
